We have read your document thoroughly and the questions we came up with are the following: Who are you trying to deceive? Where is, especially on these dates we are in, not randomly chosen, the phrase saying that “you express your sorrow to the deathly victims’ relatives and all those persons who have suffered psychological and physical injuries” coming from? ¿By any chance, do not you remember that your band, the one you do not condemn, presumed of murdering even in the weeks near Christmas in order to cause the greatest possible degree of terror? Since it does not seem so, we are going to remind you of it. ETA, throughout its history, and among the 858 crimes it has committed, has murdered in dates as these we are living in 88 people, among them, 5 children. With that as a starting point, now, making use of this occasion, and with the purpose of obtaining political advantages, are you telling us that “you express sorrow”? How many of you have made a toast to the death of those persons? How many of you have yelled in the streets that you wanted more white coffins? It takes cynicism to say that “you express sorrow.”
The problem is not your “sorrow” being insincere and a simple lie; the problem is that it is only a change in strategy. As killing is not profitable anymore and, furthermore, due to police and judicial action, the possibilities of doing it are limited, you have changed the focus to what you call “armed struggle” for a new line of action: “a wolf in sheep’s clothing.” You are trying to dress yourself in a blanket of legitimacy you have never had before and, in this attempt, ETA history, your history, bothers you. We, ETA victims, are of no matter to you, what you really want is to rewrite what has happened in the Basque Country. You are trying to turn five decades of continuous crimes of terrorism into a “political conflict between two opposite factions with victims on each side.” You do not feel any “sorrow” for us, your only intention is to mask the murders, extortions, tortures and the Diaspora the ETA have submitted thousands of Basques to, and for that purpose you are turning to the twisted and perverse distortion of converting the victimizers into victims.
We have said it several times but it seems as if the blasts from your guns have deafened you. Do not worry; from COVITE, we will repeat it as many times as necessary and in the necessary tone: In the Basque Country, there has been no political conflict and there have never been two opposite fractions. What has existed is a band of murderers that has massacred and seeded terror in a portion of the Basque society. Trying to justify our existence as victims under the excuse that a State of Law has been forced to exercise legitimate violence to face terrorist actions constitutes an immorality.
We know that there are people, and even certain institutions, which support this action. In the case of the institutions, we are not aware of the debt they might have to us, if there is any. But in the case of the people, we urge them to ask themselves, if your intervention is really sincere, why don’t you condemn ETA? Why don’t you demand its dissolution? Why do you object to Justice been applied to ETA members? How can you talk about solutions and exclude Justice? Is it possible to build the Basque Country’s future altering the reality of the facts?
As these questions do not find, and will not find an answer, we ask you, as far as we are concerned, not to use our name for your purposes. If you want to deceive society, if you want to dress yourselves in an aura of legality and democracy, and even an aura of legitimacy, and some public authorities consent to that, do it, but leave us alone.
With nothing further to add
